CHINA RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION (hereinafter referred to as the "China Railway") is going to build a maglev production line in Changsha for rail construction and locomotive production. In the mean time, a supporting maglev experimental line running at speeds of 320 km/hour will be completed in June 2018. By then, China's most advanced and fully self-developed maglev track test line and production line will bring a new atmosphere for the development of China's maglev locomotive industry.

Reportedly, China’s Shanghai Maglev Demonstration Line is the world's only commercial high-speed maglev train line, and is currently one of the 4 operating commercial maglev train lines. The other 3 are medium and low speed systems which include Japan's eastern Linimo line, Korea’s Inchon airport maglev line, and China’s Changsha maglev express line. Although China has been in the forefront of Maglev research in the world, the number of China’s maglev production lines is inadequate. At present, the only 2 maglev locomotive production lines in China are respectively owned by Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Ltd (hereinafter referred to as the "Zhuzhou motor") and Tangshan Zhongche Locomotive Vehicle Co Ltd (hereinafter referred to as the "Tangshan locomotive").

"When the construction is completed, it will become China's third maglev production line and the first maglev track production lines." said by chief expert of China Railway Construction Group (hereinafter referred to as the "railway construction"). He also pointed out that although railway construction is new to the production line construction in the field of maglev locomotive, if the future track production matches locomotive production, the above mentioned production line will be able to render 120 km more orbit and 60 more locomotives when it is completed.

When mentioning the advantages of low speed maglev transportation, the general design director of Changsha maglev line, the fourth survey and design institute of China railway construction showed us some calculations: the average cost of the low-speed maglev system is only about 1/3-1/2 of the cost of subway. In addition to the price advantage, he said, the mid and low speed maglev also has the advantages of small curve radius, strong climbing ability and little noise pollution.

Compared to Metro, light rail, new tram and other major urban rail transportation modes, maglev rail transportation has certain technical and economic advantages too. For example, in the densely built-up areas, maglev can greatly reduce the cost of other projects, such as relocation, thus renders the total cost of construction lower than other modes of transportation."

The trial operation of Beijing Metro S1 line (medium and low speed maglev track line) will open by the end of 2017, and more than ten large and medium cities such as Tianjin, Wuhan, Chengdu and Guangzhou are also planning maglev projects. By 2020, China is expected to finish more than 5 intermediate and low speed maglev commercial operation lines.
